Mining streaming company Wheaton Precious Metals is again putting mining innovation in the spotlight by offering a $1-million prize to a cleantech venture focused on sustainable water management.

This forms part of the second Future of Mining Challenge, which is now open for expressions of interest from ventures across the globe.

“Constant innovation is essential to responsibly meet the growing global demand for minerals and metals, and it is the driving force behind Wheaton's Future of Mining Challenge,” said Wheaton CEO Randy Smallwood.

The Canadian company, which partners with many of the world’s leading mining firms, is targeting technologies that improve operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

“The goal of Wheaton's Future of Mining Challenge is to help unlock and support new technologies,” said Wheaton chief sustainability officer Patrick Drouin. “Our hope is that the award will help to advance the challenge winner's technology closer to commercialization.”

Expressions of interest are open until Friday, August 29. Selected ventures will be invited to submit full applications in September, with the winner to be announced at the PDAC Convention in Toronto in March 2026.

Wheaton has partnered with the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business to strengthen venture-building and innovation support for participants.

The focus on water stewardship comes at a time when the mining industry is being called on to manage resources more sustainably, with water use a key area of concern for communities and investors alike.
